Is it a blanket, or is it a scarf?
As the weather gets cooler, we're all finding ourselves craving comfort and warmth over everything else. And that means stocking up our closets with oversized sweaters, knit hats, and plenty of blanket-like scarves. Even if the idea of big snowfalls and bustling winds still feels far away, it's the perfect time to get yourself all set for that mega-cold weather. And as we all know, late fall can have its share of chilly days, too, and when those mornings come around, you won't want to be unprepared by not having the right clothing items to keep you warm. Plus, a large plaid scarf can really add a pop to any outfit.
When it comes to the statement accessory of the moment, the lines feel a little blurred, with a plethora of cosy, chunky and oversized blanket style scarves. And while for most people the concept of a big knit to protect against the winter elements isn't exactly new, the bigger is better mentality may be.
Whereas in the past a scarf may have been an afterthought, and purely practical, these new options are the main feature - with the added benefit of actually keeping you warm, too. Crafty and fringed is the way to go for winter, worn nonchalantly like a pashmina, just chunkier.
At Brandon Maxwell and Gabriela Hearst for fall/winter 2022, models carried huge throw-style scarves over their forearms, while at Sandro and The Row, they were knotted and tied snugly around the neck. But like most trends where it's as much about the styling as it is the garment, the best inspiration comes from the street, where Acne Studios’ cult plaid version - available in a variety of prints, including a popular rainbow colourway - helped kickstart the hefty look.
